The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov), has issued preliminary fatality figures for 2006. This is the most current year that U.S. statistical data is available. (P) means that the data is preliminary and is currently being audited. Some changes to the final data could occur.

Forklift Fatalities 2006 Primary Source (P)81
Forklift Fatalities 2006 Secondary Source (P)51
Forklift Fatalities 2006 Total (P)132

The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov) has also issued the total U.S. forklift related non-fatal recordable lost time cases for 2006 (12,130).

Persons interested in obtaining detailed U.S. BLS code 851 forklift statistics from 1992 through 2006 should Google: BLS technical web question.  Complete your e-mail information and for subject use Code 851 statistics.

In the question area, ask for the following data:
Forklift Primary Source Fatalities 1992 - 2002; Forklift Primary Source Fatalities 2003-2006; Forklift Secondary Source Fatalities 1992 - 2002; Forklift Secondary Source Fatalities 2003 -2006; Estimates for code 851 non fatal cases days away from work 1992 -2001;  Estimates for code 851 non fatal cases days away from work 2002; Estimates for code 851 non fatal cases days away from work 2003 -2006.

The information will be e-mailed to you.

You should also Google: BLS Occupational Injury and Illness Classification Manual for a copy of the manual. It will help explain the data classification system statistics.

Randal,

I have searched and searched and came up empty.  The only statistic I found last year was that there were 21 forklift related deaths in Eastern Ontario over the previous 5 years, with 6 being the greatest amount in any one year.  Since I live in Eastern Ontario, I definitely point out that fact, and then knocking on wood, tell my students that I never trained at those facilities.

I would tend to believe, like anything else, take the US figures and divide by 10. lol

Google: CCOHS WORK INJURY STATISTICS. This will give you a brief overview of the Canadian National Work Injuries Statistics Program (NWISP) which is now issued by the Association of Workers Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC). I have not seen this report as it is not freely available and the hard copy cost is quite steep ($150.00) and the minimum charge for computer query is ($75.00).

The latest NWISP report should be available for free review at your Novia Scotia Workers' Compensation Board (WCB). The WCB should also be able to provide you with statistics specific to your Province of Nova Scotia.

The NWISP report may also be available through your local library through the inter-library loan program if a copy is in the library system.

Previous reports which were put out by Statistics Canada prior to March 1996 are freely available but I find their information lacking for forklift related data.

Google: CCOHS SEARCH FATALITY REPORTS DATABASE. This will provide you access to Canadian forklift fatality reports which you might find useful.

On the query page, in the box after Subject equals type in forklift. Leave all other boxes blank. Change the Return from 10 to all. Hit start search.

CCOHS is the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety and it also has forklift truck safety information available. GOOGLE: CCOHS FORKLIFT TRUCKS.
