Discussion:  '99 Yale GDP 060 diesel head gasket leak

I just purchased this fork lift knowing of a minor head gasket compression leak. Low hours (73##). Runs ok but compression leakage into the coolant is evident and a bit of white smoke when it starts up. No evidence of water in oil.
Not a big problem in my opinion but the only manual I have found so far is the parts manual and have identified the engine as a XA or HA. And the gasket sets have the same part number, making that simple. No overhead cam or timing complications.

Looks like an easy job and access it easy with those swing out side panels.

I'm ready to go ahead since I already do a lot of automotive and marine engine repairs.  What I lack is the torque and bolt sequence specifications. Maybe the valve clearances would also be helpful.

Due to the low hours, I'm not planning on doing anything beyond the head gasket. Will check the deck and head for defects and flatness. If no evidence of cracks or burned valves, I'll just put it back together, with the aid of the above information.

Thanks
Steve

Update on my earlier question.
I have since determined that the engine is a Mazda diesel 2977cc (3.0 Liter) model HA.
The head gasket is available without purchase of the complete overhaul set.
However, I still lack the Torque values and sequence.  There is  a possibility that these might be TTY or torque to yield which would also require that value/angle. I have the part number for the 11 head bolts if they require replacement. So far I have found nothing to indicate that these are TTY bolts.

If anyone has a repair manual or access to further top end repairs, then please let me know what info you have.

Thanks.

Steve

When I did one of these, a few years back, the gasket came with a instuction sheet to tighten to a certain low valve and then rotate another 1/2 turn, but I don't remember what that was. So, maybe you will get instructions with the gasket, if it is oem. I used the old bolts and everything has been fine.

Yes, I'm going OEM. PAPI Seattle has purchase Yale and I was referred to their parts people. They have been very helpful and have located the head and manifold gasket seperate  from the full overhaul set for me. At my suggestion they will get the torque spec. from their service dept. if that doesn't come with the gasket.

On the TTY topic, I have done a lot of research on this topic and for my auto repair business. I won't go into all the details but the number of times the bolts have been torqued is "a" determining factor in replacement. My general rule is I reuse them if I know for a fact that they have only been previously torqued at OEM assembly. Beyond that there is no way of knowing how often how much they might have been stretched.

One TTY factor, I came across while searching, TTY bolts seem to be confined to aluminum heads or some laminated head gaskets. I think the Yale (Mazda) diesel has a cast iron head.

UP Date on OP:

Well I got the head gasket today from PaPE equipment and it is the label says it is a Hyster product.
Maybe Hyster also uses the Mazda 3L HA diesel engine. I won't know if this is the correct head gasket until I pull the head. About all I can do now is count the head bolts and maybe take some measurements.

Their aren't any torgue specs/sequences instructions with it and I haven't had any luck finding that info.

Still looking for help??

Steve

Yale and Hyster have joined forces.  Parts Supply Corporation in MI. sells all the parts for Mazdas and probably would have info.
