Can you please share your views on how the Indian forklift market might evolve in short term (1yr)?

In the English I was taught, short term change (1 yr) usually is not the same as evolving change.
in the next year, the market will grow some, no matter where.
I wonder if Indiangirl is talking about unit sales or styling or tech.

Good subject that deserves some serious thought. India has some 1.129 Billion people. The population grew 21% in the 10 years 1991 to 2001 (according to Wikipedia). The second largest population in the world with a rapidly growing middle class. Once a sleeping giant is no longer sleeping. The Materials Handling industry in India has to grow at a major rate with that sort of growth in demand and associated wealth. Without considering their considerable manufacturing industries if we just think of the demand in terms of imports it has to be high on the agenda of all the major forklift manufacturers.

I would love to hear some informed viewpoints especially about short term expectations.

Can anyone tell us which major players already have manufacturing interests inside India?

JCB has for many years had an manufacturing plant in Delhi. Over the last 5/6 years they have built a further 2 manufacturing plants and a design centre in Pune near to Mumbai. Although they do not yet produce their Teletruk there, they do produce some of the their backhoe loaders and 360 excavators. Maybe, in the future, they will produce forklifts there.

I know a certain manuf. is going to begin sourcing rims from india...I'm assuming the market as a whole over there is ripe for business...some of the "tyre" manuf. over there are suspect though...

There are several local manufacturers, Godrej and Voltas being the largest ones, in forklift segment with approx 1500 units each sold last year, Both are also manufacturing small Warehouse trucks, and there are several other players such as Josts, Maini, Puma lift.
In recent years the Chinese have started to export trucks to India.
Indian distributors re-brand the trucks and sell it in the local market under their own brand, one major player here is Nilkamal.
Lately Kompress, a storage solution provider, also started to import warehouse trucks, mainly smaller units from China.
Total market CB and WH were just about 5000 units in 2009, so the potential for growth is good.
Imported Forklift and warehouse are becoming more popular despite a price at least twice the locally, but far less technology advances trucks.
Retail sector, mainly local due to government regulations related to investment and ownership, and Logistics will grow faster than other segments since there is a need for improve distribution and meet the growing middle class increase in consumption.
One major obstacle to growth is infrastructure; roads and powersupply are in avery bad shape and today's structure cannot support future growth.
Growth in unit terms might not be very high since India is still at low volumes, but % wise it will be one of the fastest in the world over the next decade. India need to consume 20 times today’s volume to match China and 100 times Western Europe….just to give an example on the growth potential. This will not happened overnight, India is still far behind China, but the outlook for India’s MHE market is bright (but difficult) indeed.........
