fork clamps are big, bulky and expensive. They also derate the forklift extensively. My clients just want sideshifters and fork positioners with 6' forks. Unfortunately we handle alot of wood reels. any suggestions to get away from clamps?

Wow, Xman, this is supposed to be "fun at work". I don't know one person (other than yourself) who considers fork clamps 'fun'.
You might get better* answers if you repost in some forum category like "Lifting machines".
*=better as in serious rather than fun.
But since you set me up with your last line,I'll try to give it a "fun at work" answer to the question of "any suggestions to get away from clamps?"

To paraphrase a line from the movie _The_ _Matrix_; "when you see a clamp, do what we do; RUN, RUN like heck" (the clamps are coming!!!)  ;-)
