Discussion:  How to empty a container?

Over the next few months the number of containers we receive will increase considerably.
The problem is that all the parts in the container are 3-4metres long and getting them out is very difficult.
Once we open the door we cannot put a sling around to drag them out. Our forklift tynes are not long enough to get past the centre of gravity and lift the pallet. Even with slippers on we only just reach the COG.
Lifting one end and dragging, sliding out works but it is not a very safe operation.
We could get a bigger fork with tynes 2400mm long. But this is huge for any other activity on site.
Does anybody have any better suggestions apart from picking up the container and tipping the parts out.

I think your suggestion of getting the proper tools to do the proper job sounds like the "best idea" to me. (We could get a bigger fork with tynes 2400mm long.)

You have just hit on one of the reasons forklifts can be rented.

can you get behind the load and put wheels under the side away from the lift??

why not drag the whole thing out of the container before trying to lift it at all??

Can you put a jack under one end and put a dolly under it. The you would be able to pull it out relatively easy.

Can you give me an idea of the weight range of loads handled?

I saw this problem being overcome in the Moroccan port of Ceuta. The load was about 4 mt long, heavy and wrapped around with timber. The solution was to use a mobile crane with telescopic boom. It was possible for workers to enter the container and strap a harness around the load so that the crane could drag the load out gradually, resting the near end on a pile of pallets outside the container built up to the container deck's level. Once the end was resting on the pallets it was then possible to reposition the harness centrally around the load and lift away. However, it took four men quite some time and a mobile crane, which is fine if you can afford it. Still, give me some more details and I may be able to come up with something more economically feasible.

Parts are 4mt long 1.2mt wide including packing and between 1 to 1.5 mt high and up to 1500kg
Basically means that we cannot get around the part or into the container to fit a sling to drag out the first one. That is my problem.
These things are easy to put into the container just lineup and push. Getting out is a little more complex.

What about using telescopic forks?
If you need 2400mm long forks, telescopic forks will achieve this extension and have a closed length of 1375mm.

THe basic problem here is your supplier is generating the problem - it is their responsibility to change their processes to make it reasonable and safe for you to remove the items from the container.

I suggest you demand they attach ropes or slings to each unit in a manner that enables you to pull the items out with forklift assistance.

You might be able to thing of other processes.

if you could have them ship in open top containers it would get rid of your problems. Just a thought. If not larger capacity truck due to load center issues and long forks or extensions might be an answer.

If you are going to get another shipment like this ask for a side opening container, something similar to this [url/email removed]

Now to get out the goods you could use what some refrigerated truck drivers use to get pallets to the back of the truck without using a trolley jack.

It's a long bar that hooks onto the pallet, and the forklift allowing you to drag it towards you.  It wouldn't cost much to get one made, and you can get it made to the length you need.

Are you seen Meclift 16 tons. Variable Reach Truck? The ML1612R is capable of handling 16 tons and driving completely inside a container, making it the only truck in its class with this ability.
The optional Double Forks System for ML1612R makes cargo handling even more efficient. It is a special attachment which offers a variety of benefits when loading and unloading containers. With these double forks you can handle, for example, 4 Euro pallets or a similar load at a time.

ML1612R will have spur wheels when it can operate 16tons. at extended condition. Check our website.
